Watery grave for five youth in Salem, Arakkonam
Five youth drowned in a lake and a pond in two differents incidents in Salem and Arakkonam on Tuesday. While three boys died in Salem, bodies of two college students were recovered from a pond in Arakkonam.

In Salem district, the three boys, who went to bathe in a lake drowned on Tuesday afternoon. Police said S Rithish, 16, his brother Harish, 17 and their friend A Darshan from Ambedkar Nagar in Pukkampatty village had gone to bathe in Nagirettipatti Lake near Mecheri, when they unfortunately met with their watery grave.
The lake, spread over in an area of 10 acres, was brimming due to heavy downpour over the last few days. The boys have passed Classes 9 and 10 from a government school in their neighbourhood. “They were bathing by diving into the water, when the trio got trapped in the slush and began to drown. Villagers, who were there, made a futile effort to rescue them,” police said.
Mecheri police retrieved the bodies and sent them for post mortem at Mettur GH.
Meanwhile in Ranipet, two the college students, both from Chennai were found dead in a pond on the outskirts of Arakkonam town on Tuesday
Police said that Harish (22), son of Sankar, a lawyer of Arakkonam and studying aeronautical engineering in a private engineering college in Chennai at Red hills and Alexander (23), son of Devagan, of the same town doing his final year BSc were found floating in a pond in the Defence Colony. Alerted by the residents, police along with Fire and Rescue Service men fished out the bodies. They registered a case. Police said that Harish was found in his under garments and Alexander was fully clothed. The credit, debit cards, purse and a phone belonging to Harish were missing.
