CM, Deputy, LoP hail SC verdict on daughters’ rights

In a tweet, Palaniswami, who is also the co-cordinator of the ruling AIADMK, expressed happiness about the apex court verdict providing equal rights for daughters. The judgment, which would protect social justice, was welcome, he added. 

Panneerselvam, who is the coordinator of the AIADMK, said he wholeheartedly welcomes the judgment that would uphold social justice. “Apart from upholding social justice, it will further s t r e n g t h e n women’s development,” the Deputy Chief Minister said in a tweet. 

DMK president and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly MK Stalin, in a tweet, also wholeheartedly welcomed the historic judgment of the Supreme Court and said the Dravidian movement has never rejected equal rights for women in property. 

Since the late leader M Karunanidhi had brought an Act 30 years ago that women have equal share in property, today’s apex court verdict was a victory for DMK’s policy. “It will be a good support for women to live with their heads held high and with equal powers in society, economy, family and other fields,” the Opposition Leader added. 

The apex court, in a landmark judgment, ruled in favour of rights of daughters to have equal share in a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) property. A t h r e e - j u d g e bench lead by Justice Arun Mishra said the daughters have copar cenary rights on the property of their parents even if the latter died before the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act, 2005 came into force.
