For the first time, the Higher Education Department has launched an online admission process for students seeking Arts and Science courses in State-run colleges like it was done for engineering aspirants.

At present, a little over 300 government and government-aided Arts and Science colleges provide UG, PG, B.Ed, M.Phil, and PhD courses for about one lakh students. Of the total, about 92,000 seats are available for various Arts and Science courses this academic year.

A senior official from the Directorate of Collegiate Education told DT Next on Thursday that due to COVID-19 pandemic situation all the admission process will be done only online. “This includes registration, preparing rank list and selection process,” he said adding: “As per the schedule, students are now uploading original certificates.”

Stating that once this process is over, the preparation of rank list will be done before selecting the students, the official said: “All the admitted students will be intimated via SMS”.

He said since the government has ensured laptops for these students, given free of cost during Class 12, conducting online classes will not be a big issue. “Alternative arrangements will be made for those without a computer,” he said adding the same will be intimated to the students.

The official also pointed out that the number of seats in State-run Arts and Science Colleges was increased by more than 10,000 in the last two years since 11 new institutions were established by the government.
