Stalin writes to Sonia, non-BJP CMs on OBC reservation

DMK president MK Stalin on Sunday wrote to opposition party leaders and non-BJP Chief Ministers across the country to highlight the Centre’s alleged discrimination towards OBC communities in India by denying them lawful reservation in the admission to medical and dental courses.

Stalin also sought the support and voice of the leaders to defend the defenseless and preserve the basic structure of the Constitution in relation to reservations. In his letter addressed to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi among other national leaders, Stalin accused the BJP-led Centre of denying reservation to OBCs in the State-surrendered seats to the All India Quota (AIQ) in medical and dental courses. He said OBC reservation was not given in the state-contributed seats despite regulations enabling application of State reservation laws in the case of these seats.

Alleging that the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) was systematically applying less reservation to deny lawful reservations across India, Stalin drew the leaders’ attention to the fact that not a single seat was reserved for OBCs in the last four years in AIQ. He said DGHS was only a counselling agency to conduct exams and fill up seats and had no powers to dictate terms relating to State reservation laws or deny implementation of reservations. Stalin said about 10,000 seats (2,729 in Tamil Nadu) were denied to OBCs in the last four years due to application of wrong reservation policy of the Centre.
