83.5 per cent new Covid cases outside Chennai, 85 fatalities in Tamil Nadu

Chennai alone registered 1,155 new cases while the covid infections in neighbouring districts saw a surge.

Tamil Nadu recorded 6,986 new COVID-19 positive cases, from testing a whopping 62,305 persons taking the tally of coronavirus infected to 2.1 lakh (2,13,723).

While 5,471 Covid-19 patients were discharged from various hospitals, the number of active cases stood at 53,703.

The state also recorded 85 deaths on Sunday, with a total of 3,494 people succumbing to the virus.

Meanwhile, the number of daily new coronavirus cases outside Chennai continues to exceed those within the state capital.

While Chennai is witnessing a mild increase in the number of COVID-19 cases with the city reporting 1,155 cases (94,695 overall cases) on Sunday, the neighbouring districts of Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram  reported an alarming rise with 501, 480 and 363 new cases over the past 24 hours. The combined tally of these three districts has crossed 1,300 cases in a day.

At least 350 cases were reported in Ranipet and Virudhunagar while Coimbatore, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Theni and Thoothukudi  reported more than 200 cases on Sunday.

Tamil Nadu has tested 23,51,463 samples and 22,62,738 people so far, according to the media bulletin issued by the Directorate of Public Health.

So far, 1,56,526 people have been discharged, according to a state government statement.

The active cases in Chennai stands at 13,744 while 1,315 persons were discharged on Sunday. 26 of the 85 deaths were reported in the state capital.

The number of infected children in the age group 0-12 years went up to 10,691
