He was said to have suffered from back pain. Srithar was escorted by the police from Madurai Central jail to the hospital around 10.30 am, sources said. The Central Jail in Madurai has an enrollment of about 1,200 remand and convicted prisoners. Srithar was one of the prisoners held on remand, sources added.

Srithar was one of the 10 cops accused in the alleged custodial deaths of the father and son-duo last month. He was nabbed earlier this month after the CB-CID team gave a chase. He was lodged in the Madurai Central Jail. His detention resulted from the CB-CID probe and subsequently several agencies probed into the custodial deaths, sources said.

Deputy Inspector General of Prisons (Madurai Range) Palani, said the remand prisoner Srithar had constant neck pain and he underwent medical treatment from private consultants earlier. When he complained of neck pain, an orthopedic doctor from Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital screened him on Wednesday and advised him to have a scan. Based on it, Srithar was taken to the Madurai GRH and was kept in the hospital. If the doctors suggested further treatments and required admission, procedures would be followed, or else he would be brought back to the jail, the DIG said.
