‘Govt has no regard for human lives’
Makkal Needhi Maiam president Kamal Haasan on Friday expressed his displeasure over the continuing incidents of sewer deaths in TN despite a ban in manual scavenging.
Chennai
Haasan said the death of two workers while cleaning sewer in Chennai shows continuing neglect for human lives. Only on July 2, four workers were killed in Thoothukudi. Haasan said the manual scavenging was banned in 1993 and it was made into legislation in 2013 with various amendments. “In 2014, the apex court ruled that all the states should follow the law and prohibited hiring of workers to clean the sewer and asked to take steps to rehabilitate the workers involved in manual scavenging. However, between 1993 and 2019, 206 workers were killed in the State,” said the actor-politician adding the government should not remain a spectator like in other cases of injustices.
