Video call for Nalini not in MEA’s realm
With the Tamil Nadu Government reiterating that the Centre alone can decide on whether Nalini and Murugan, convicted in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, could converse with their relatives abroad, the Madras High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Union Home Ministry to respond on the issue.

A division bench comprising Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice VM Velumani, before whom the letter written by the TN Government to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) was produced, took exception to the letter being not recommendatory in nature.
However, with the MEA stating that such grant of permission falls under the purview of the Union Home Ministry, Assistant Solicitor General G Karthikeyan sought 10 days to respond following which the bench adjourned the case.
The letter also stated that given the urgency, the deputy secretary, Women Safety Division, Ministry of Home Affairs, was contacted over the phone. It was then informed that no guidelines have been issued by the ministry in respect of making video/voice calls by the prisoners.
The plea moved by Nalini’s mother seeks to allow the couple to speak to their relatives abroad similar to how other prisoners were allowed.
