CB-CID begins probe into custodial deaths case
Soon after the judicial probe into the deaths of Jayaraj and Bennix father and son, both traders, was over in the Sathankulam police station on Tuesday, Deputy Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar, CB-CID, Tirunelveli, commenced investigation into the case
The High Court took suo motu conginsance and ordered a judicial probe by Kovilpatti Judicial Magistrate M S Bharathidasan in the case registered by the Kovilpatti East police under Section 176 (1) (1-A) of Cr PC.
Meanwhile, the Kovilpatti Deputy Superintendent of Police submitted case diary to the Tirunelveli CB CID. Now, the CB CID has started initial proceedings in the case. Subsequently, witnesses would be examined and necessary documents would be verified as part of the investigation, sources said.
Both the son and the father were picked up on the night of June 19 for keeping the shop open beyond the permitted time under the lockdown norms. After remaining in detention for days, Bennix and Jayaraj died in Kovilpatti hospital, sources said.
