Grading system to decide marks for Class 10 kids

After declaring all pass, the State government also announced that for Class 10 students, 80 per cent of marks will be awarded based on their performance in the quarterly and half-yearly exams and 20 per cent marks will be based on their attendance.

A senior official from the Directorate of School Education told DT Next that with a series of complaints from the parents that many private schools were indulging in manipulating marks for the students, the government is working out the possibilities of giving grade system.

"The School Education Department's move to give grade system for Class 10 students also came after several government and government-aided schools could not produce the details of marks secured in quarterly exams, especially in the rural areas", he said, adding, many students have lost their quarterly and half-yearly answer sheets, which were mandatory for calculating marks.

"In addition, there were also reports that certain private schools have conducted secret quarterly and half-yearly exams online since students could not produce answer sheets of the earlier exams", he said.

The official said it would also be difficult to ascertain whether all the marks awarded to the students by the private students were genuine or not.

The official said accordingly the grade system will be based on formative assessment and summative assessment.

"The points will be calculated formative assessment (40 marks), which is class projects and other academic-related activities of the students and similarly, points will also be derived by summative assessment (60 marks) that is the performance of various exams and revision tests," he said.
