People oppose sudden haltingof OHT works
More than 100 residents, including women of the Krishnampalli hamlet of Sendathur village panchayat in Pernambut panchayat union staged a demonstration in front of the Sendathur panchayat office against a former AIADMK panchayat union chairman who stopped construction of a much needed overhead tank (OHT) for the village on Monday.
Vellore
The village’s water source was a worn out old OHT located inside a government school. When this was brought to the notice of the district administration, Collector A Shanmuga Sundaram sanctioned Rs 11.63 lakh for the construction of a new 30,000 litres OHT recently.
Resident M Lavakumar said, “Work was delayed by nearly 40 days due to issues on site selection and when this was finally completed, villagers pooled Rs 60,000 of their funds for the basic earth work.” When work for pillar erection started, former panchayat union chairman stopped the work on the pretext that this facility was needed for another village nearby.
Another resident V Devakumar added, “We do not understand why the former PU chairman stopped the work as funds totaling Rs 35.43 lakh were sanctioned in February itself. We do not understand why he singles out the Krishnampalli OHT work.” Vellore Consumer Protection Federation president K Sathiyamoorthy said, “the federation will move the court if the work is not restarted immediately.”
