Centum scorers may decline in Class 12 Science this year

Around 8.35 lakh students had appeared for Class 12 board exams, conducted from March 2 to 24. Of this, about 4.5 lakh students were from Science stream and a little over 2.5 lakh from Commerce. The evaluations, which started in May last week, ended in the second week of June where more than 50 lakh answer papers were corrected by about 25,000 teachers.

Teachers who evaluated the answer sheets, seeking anonymity, told DT Next that many students, especially in the Science stream, have not performed well as the new syllabus was a bit hard to crack. “I had corrected Mathematics papers. None of the students has got more than 85% in my batch of question papers,” a teacher from a government-aided school in the city said. Claiming that most of the students did not attend all the questions, especially in the five-mark category, he said: “Apart from the syllabus, the question paper was also tough this year”. Echoing similar views, another evaluator, who corrected Physics answer scripts, said: “Though many students have secured pass marks, the performance was not up to the mark.” Likewise, teachers also said the performance of the students even in Chemistry and Biology was poor. However, Commerce students, who also had a new syllabus, was relatively better than their Science group counterparts. “Students have performed well in Commerce and Accountancy since the question papers were easy,” a teacher, who takes classes for Commerce, said.

According to her, the new syllabus was fully focused on Science subjects to gear up students for competitive exams such as JEE and NEET. “Therefore, the new Commerce curriculum was not that tough compared to Science subjects,” she added.
