With a steep surge in COVID-19 cases across Tamil Nadu, the Tirupur Corporation has gone tech-savvy to avoid virus spread by fixing a sensor to ensure social distancing among public visiting the office.

This Social Distancing Alert Device (SDAD), developed by Enthu Technology Solutions India Private Limited in Coimbatore, works on image processing technology through artificial intelligence.
The device fixed on a pilot basis by the civic body captures images of people in a queue at fixed intervals and process the same to ensure people follow social distancing norms.
“The device would automatically measure if people in a queue are following social distancing of 1.2 meters each. If not, it would make voice alerts and also indicate the violator in the monitor. Ever since the device was fixed a fortnight ago, people have fallen in line with the norms,” said Moorthi Kanagaraj, founder-director of the technology firm.
The real-time data like the number of people as well as the status of their physical distance will also get updated in a cloud platform. It would be useful to analyse the pattern of people getting adapted to the social distance guidelines. SDAD may come in handy in places like ticket counters at railway stations, hospitals, banks and airports.
“The device can also be tuned to issue alerts on the crowd gathered in a place. A few factories have fixed our device to avoid its workers from gathering together at the workplace. Also, Columbia in the US has shown interest in our device to avoid sudden gathering of people to protest in public places,” said Kanagaraj.
