Executed at a cost of Rs 441 crore, the two tier flyover, the longest in the State, is expected to ease traffic woes in Salem city. Administrative sanction for the project was granted in 2015 and foundation was laid in 2016.
The Chief Minister had inaugurated the first level of the flyover connecting AVR roundabout and Hasthampatti junction last year. It helped tourists to reach Yercaud Road directly from Kochi-Bengaluru Highway.
And the construction of the 5.3-km second stretch connecting Kuranguchavadi on Omalur Main Road and Anna Park got over recently. While inaugurating the flyover, Palaniswami named it as ‘Puratchi Thalaivi J Jayalalithaa two-tier flyover’.
He also announced the 1.28-km flyover on the Salem-Bengaluru Highway near AVR roundabout to be called ‘Puratchi Thalaivar M.G.R. flyover’. Besides, the CM inaugurated the Leigh Bazaar flyover.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Palaniswami said that the two-tier flyover is a pride of Salem. “The new flyovers opened in Salem will help to ease traffic congestion, reduce accidents and facilitate faster movement of public,” he said adding that it was former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who readily granted permission, sanctioned funds and ensured that the projects were started on time.
