Farmer kills mom, sister over land row near Gudiyattam

Police said the deceased were identified as Indrani (70), wife of late Manika Gounder, and his daughter Chinnamma (40).

The accused Muniraj (50), son of Manika Gounder, lived with his wife and three children in his farmland in Kannampatti while his sisters Chinnamma and Suryakala lived with the latter’s two children nearby the farmland. There had been a long pending property dispute between Muniraj and his mother.

On Wednesday morning when Muniraj went to irrigate his field, a quarrel erupted between him and his mother and Chinnamma joined in her support.

During the course of the argument, Muniraj in a fit of rage picked up a log and hit both Indrani and Chinnama. Meanwhile, Ranjit Kumar (32), a farmer and a neighbour, upon hearing the cries of the women rushed with other residents to the spot. However, by then, Muniraj had fled the spot, while both the women were bleeding profusely.

While Chinnamma died while being carried on a cot to the main road, Indrani died on the way to Gudiyattam Government hospital. Meanwhile, Muniraj surrendered to the Paradarami police. Further investigations in the double murder case are underway.
