The excavations were stopped over the last two months due to the spread of COVID- 19. Meanwhile, the State government announced recently that excavations would begin in Kodumanal, in Adichanallur of Thoothukudi, and in Keezhadi of Sivaganga district.

A team of ten persons including students of archaeology participated in the preliminary works in the place, an important archaeological site, under the control of State Archaeological Department of Tamil Nadu and is located on the northern banks of Noyyal River, a tributary of the Cauvery.

“Shrubs around the site were cleared and area to be excavated were measured and marked. The digging of the site is likely to commence in a few days. The excavation is likely to throw up new and interesting evidences of ancient lifestyle and articles used in those times,” said an official of the archaeological department.

Archaeologists have previously unearthed megalithic burials, menhirs and Roman silver coins from this ancient city ‘Kodumanam’. Besides, this city was once flourishing in trade and had connections with the Chola port city, as per the Sangam literature.
