According to police, V Palanisamy, 75, who runs a fertilizer shop in Udumalpet was attacked by robbers before fleeing away with the cash. The thieves broke into his house at Elaiyamuthur pirivu at 3 am, when the elderly man was fast asleep in the ground floor. His wife was in another bedroom, while his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren were in the first floor.

The robbers broke into Palanisamy’s bedroom and attacked him with a sickle. Then they tied him up and took away Rs 16 lakh kept in the bureau. The trio also lifted the digital video recorder connected to CCTV cameras fixed in the house. The gang then fled away in the car parked in the portico of the house.

A little later, Palanisamy managed to untie himself and raised an alarm.

Superintendent of Police Disha Mittal and other officers visited the scene of crime and held inquiries. Police said that other members of the family were unaware of the break-in.

A sniffer dog was pressed into service and finger print experts collected chance prints from the scene of crime. The Udumalpet police have registered a case and two special teams were formed to nab the culprits. This incident comes a day after police arrested a 34-year-old for looting 10 sovereigns of gold jewels and cash by threatening two staff of a private gold loan firm in Tirupur.
