10 injured, 6 held in Cuddalore group clash

Around 10 persons were severely injured after a group clash between two backward communities erupted over enmity in local body polls that concluded in December last year. Police arrested six persons from both the groups.

It is said that rivalry started between two groups led by Sankar and Vinod during local body polls in Dharmanallur village near Kammapuram in Cuddalore district. However, Sankar’s wife Rajeswari was declared victor and their enmity had continued and so the verbal quarrels in the village.

Since the lockdown, both the groups were silent and there was no quarrel recorded. However, on Monday, after the Tasmac outlets resumed business, the groups had to face each other after a long gap while purchasing liquor. On Monday evening, it is said, a few persons belonging to Sankar’s group located Vinod on the main road and they had reportedly picked up a quarrel.

Suddenly, the verbal quarrel turned into an assault in which Vinod sustained severe injury and was rushed to Virudhachalam GH. In the evening, Vinod who was discharged, lodged a complaint with the Kammapuram police against Sankar and the group. However, it is said, the police failed to initiate any action against Sankar.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the supporters of Vinod who found a few supporters of Sankar on the road again picked up a quarrel under the influence of alcohol. Soon, Sankar’s supporters started assaulting the supporters of Vinod in which 10 persons, including Sankar had sustained severe injuries.

On information, police rushed the injured to Virudhachalam GH. The police also arrested six persons. A case has been filed against them and investigations are on.
