Liquor sales cross Rs 100 crore in State

With the government giving certain relaxations including making Aadhaar card not mandatory for the purchase of liquor, tipplers across Tamil Nadu enthusiastically purchased their quota at the Tasmac outlets, which saw an overall revenue of somewhere between Rs 110 and Rs 120 crore.

With Apex Court allowing the Tamil Nadu government to open liquor shops, about 3,600 Tasmac outlets have functioned across the State barring Chennai and in Tiruvallur district. A senior official from the Tasmac, said the token system helped to maintain the required social distancing among the consumers.

“As per the government’s instructions, Tasmac salespersons have ensured that only 500 tokens were issued in each liquor outlet,” he said adding, though the sales have been restricted to 500 persons per shop per day, the consumers were allowed to carry more than one full bottle of IMFL (750 ml or two half or four 180 ml bottles) in many shops and therefore the revenue crossed Rs 100 crore.” However, the official said that the liquor sales are expected to gradually reduce in the coming days as most of the consumers purchased their required quotas.

Stating that in many districts including Cuddalore, Tiruchy, and Coimbatore, consumers started queuing up before the liquor outlets around 8 am, the official said, “Sales also picked up only by noon in most of the liquor vending outlets especially in Madurai, Tanjavur, Tiruvarur, Tenkasi, Tiruchy and Salem.”
