    Tamil Nadu crosses 10,000 mark with 434 cases, 5 deaths recorded

    With 434 new positive cases, Tamil Nadu crossed 10,000 mark of COVID-19 cases on Friday. The State also recorded five deaths due to COVID-19, taking the toll of total number of deaths to 71.

    The total number of cases of COVID-19 in the State had crossed 5,000 mark on May 7 and within a span of just over a week, the total number of cases in the State stands at 10,108. Tamil Nadu currently has a total number of 7,435 active cases, which was about 3,822 active cases on April 7. The active cases have almost doubled within about a week.

    On Friday, Chennai accounted for 309 new positive cases of COVID-19, while Tiruvallur recorded 21 cases and Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram had 20 and 11 cases respectively. Madurai and Theni recorded six cases each, while Tiruvannamalai and Cuddalore reported three new cases each. Perambalur reported two cases, while Dindigul, Thanjavur, Tenkasi and Virudhunagar has one case each.

    As many as five deaths were reported in the State with several co-morbidities in all the cases. While four deaths were reported in Chennai, including two deaths at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, one death was at Omandurar Medical College and Hospital, one was reported at Stanley Medical College and Hospital, another death was reported at Thoothukudi Medical College and Hospital.

    Of the new positive cases of COVID-19, 49 persons who came to Tamil Nadu from other States and countries tested positive. While six people who tested positive arrived from Maldives, 40 of them reached here from Maharashtra, two from Gujarat and one from Karnataka.

    So far, 2,599 patients in the State have recovered from COVID, including 359 who were discharged from various hospitals on Friday.

    As many as 11,672 samples were tested on Friday and 4,598 are under observation in isolation wards across the State.
