National Green Tribunal: Table report on projects in Theni forests
The southern bench of the National Green Tribunal has directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to submit a report within three months regarding the environmental impact of the development project in eco-sensitive areas, forest wildlife and existing water bodies in Genguvarpatti village near Periyakulam in Theni district.

When the matter came up for hearing through video conference on Tuesday, counsel for TNPCB and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF and CC) submitted that the said area was inspected on March 19 and want some time for filing the report.
Praying for three months to file the report, counsel said, “We couldn’t prepare the report as they are not able to attend the office following the present lockdown due to coronavirus and all the officers are deputed for other essential services to meet the situation.”
Recording the submissions, Justice K Ramakrishnan, Judicial Member; and Saibal Dasgupta, Expert Member, granted the committee three months to submit the report and posted the matter for hearing on August 25.
The issue pertains to the establishment of a development project in Genguvarpatti village. In January, the tribunal had constituted a committee to inspect the area in question and consider the issue regarding the environmental impact of the project.
