With a daily surge in number of people visiting Amma Canteens a pet project of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, it has turned out to be a difficult task to control crowd in the wake of looming threat of COVID-19 spread.

Corporation Commissioner M Elangovan said that free food has been served three times a day in the 11 Amma Canteens in corporation limits to more than 20,000 people on a daily basis. “At any given time only 15 persons can have food on the premises. But the crowd is larger in numbers. To overcome the shortage of vessels, food was given in arecanut plates. Henceforth, only parcel food will be given to people till May 17,” the Commissioner said. The Commissioner also urged people to come with their own vessels to get food from the canteen. “Those who do not bring their own vessels will be given food in arecanut plates. They should walk out with the food and will not be allowed to eat on the premises,” he added.
