    It’s just for me, says 70-year-old Arani woman

    On the day liquor sales commenced again across the state, a 70-year-old female customer in Arani town created waves by demanding five quarter bottles. However, the staff in the outlet said that she can buy only four for the amount she paid due to increase in the prices. When reporters asked for whom she was buying the bottles, she said “it is for me and not for anybody else.”

    Though the crowd was orderly, age category (allowing above 50 year persons first, then those above 40 years and those below 40 years in the evening) to be followed for serving the customers was given a go by and almost all the shops attended to the customers on a first come first served basis. Only their Aadhaar cards were checked.

    In Kagithapattarai four MDMK members raised slogans against the reopening of the outlets. They were pacified and removed by the police.

    However, police fearing that illicit hooch might mix up, ensured that known distillation points like Ariyur in Vellore were kept under surveillance through drones. On Thursday, in Vellore, 55 outlets reopened and another 17 outlets located in COVID-19 containment zones remained shut.

    In Tirupattur district where Tirupattur town, Ambur and Vaniyambadi were under total lockdown, only 10 outlets were opened while 28 remained closed. Similarly, in Ranipet district, 81 outlets reopened while 7 were shut. Of the 215 retail outlets in Tiruvannamalai district 166 were open on Thursday.

    In Pernambut town, Congress committee president G Suresh Kumar shot off a letter to Collector A Shanmuga Sundaram to close two outlets.
