Virus puts TN universities’ intl conferences in the limbo

The pandemic has brought all academic activities to a standstill, with a series of national and international student conferences that were announced by the universities in Tamil Nadu unlikely to happen anytime soon. More than 10 State-run universities, including Anna University and the University of Madras, had planned international conferences from April till November this year.

Among these were Anna University’s IEEE third international conference on Norbert Wiener in the 21st Century "Being Human in a Global Village" in Chennai in July, and international conference on "Artificial Intelligence and Evolutionary Computations in Engineering Systems" in the last week of April.

Similarly, the University of Madras had also planned an international conference on Nuclear Science and Advance Materials at its Guindy campus in May, and an international conference on "Containment, Collection, and Arrangement in South Asian Religions", organised jointly by University of Madras and Elon University, USA, to be held in July.

Alagappa University was also preparing to conduct an international conference on "Emerging Trends in Computational Intelligence Techniques (ICETCIT - 2020)”. Other universities in the State were also planning international student's conferences between April and September.

Though the universities have only announced the postponement of these conferences, it is unlikely that these events would be held this year due to the increase in the number of coronavirus cases across the country, sources said.

A senior official from the Higher Education Department told DT Next that authorities were expected to review all the international engagements listed by the institutions soon after the lockdown is lifted.

"In view of the coranavirus threat, it is impossible to conduct even a national level conference," said the official. "However, senior officials and representatives of the universities will soon meet and discuss in detail about all the pros and cons before conducting any event," he added.

Any international conference would be organised only after the world gets over the threat of coronavirus. "Seeing the current scenario, it is not possible to conduct any event anytime soon," he added.
