DMK accuses EPS of taking unilateral decisions

A day after offering support of its MPs to Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to get the state’s due share of funds from the Centre, the DMK on Thursday launched an all-out assault on the CM for undermining democracy and acting unilaterally for self-promotion during the coronavirus crisis.

In a case by case critique, the DMK party organ Murasoli accused Palaniswami of functioning unilaterally to score political brownie points during pandemic crisis and said that there was no democracy without contrarian views.

An editorial published by the DMK mouthpiece on Thursday said that it was not democratic on the part of CM to act as if he’s the only intelligent person and make meaningless statements. Questioning as to where the CM had learnt this political democracy from, the DMK said, “One requires experience to understand healthy politics. EPS became CM at VK Sasikala’s behest. It is a tragedy. He accuses Stalin of engaging in opportunistic politics. EPS does not understand that every social development gravitates towards politics. “There is no democracy without contrarian views. Stalin has understood that. Hence, he has appealed to the people to fully support the government,” the DMK party organ said, trying to differentiate between the functioning style of Stalin and the CM.

Reiterating that the government cannot do all relief works on its own and people should be involved in helping the affected, the DMK said, “Our leader (Stalin) had raised it in the Assembly. He proposed an all-party meeting, but Palaniswami called it a medical issue and declined to hold the meeting. He assumed himself to be Dr AL Mudaliyar (renowned scholar of Madras presidency in early 20th century). Even Mudaliar would not have spoken thus.”

“He (Chief Minister) had convened a meeting of junior ministers who are distributing relief materials without following social distancing. The CM had gone to Salem as well. What has become of social distancing then?” Murasoli wondered. “What kind of democracy is this? Why cannot the CM convene a meeting of opposition parties like the PM did?” the principal opposition party asked.

Citing a media report suggesting that the CM was behaving in a way it promotes himself and his party, the mouthpiece said, “Let neutral people weigh the statements made by Stalin so far. DMK has given in writing to various officials concerned to utilise its buildings for treating COVID-19 patients. Has the CM either welcomed or acknowledged it so far?”
