E Sulachana (24), the wife of Ezhumalai (26), a resident of Rettiyapatti near Manapprai, was pregnant and developed labour pain on Tuesday afternoon. Soon, Ezhumalai took her to Balaji Hospital in Manapparai with the help of an ambulance.

Since there were complications, the doctors advised Sulochana for caesarian for which she needed O+ blood. As there was no stock of blood and she could not arrange for blood owing to lockdown, the doctors in the hospital asked her to go home and come after four days.

Because of the lockdown, the ambulance driver reportedly refused to take them back and the Ezhumalai couple decided to go to Rettiyapatti, seven kilometres away from Manapparai.

When they reached Kamarajar Statue Junction near Manapparai bus stand, S Syed Abuthaheer (23), a constable on duty found the woman struggling to walk. He then arranged lunch for the couple and asked them to wait for a few more minutes.

After 2 pm, as his duty got over, Abuthaheer accompanied the couple to the hospital and donated his blood. The doctors then carried out caesarian and Sulochana delivered a baby girl around 10 pm. It was only on receiving news that both mother and newborn are safe did the constable leave the hospital.
