    The Madras High Court was informed on Friday that it was not practically possible to distribute cash and essentials to people at the respective door steps.

    Additional Advocate General PH Arvind Pandian told a division bench comprising Justice Vineet Kothari and Justice R Suresh Kumar that electronic machines, where the record is kept, cannot be moved from place to place. He, however submitted that measures with regard to social distancing at the time of distribution of essential items is being followed by opening sufficient number of distribution centres and even if some exception has occurred, the State authorities will take care that such things will not recur. 

    Recording the same and directing the State to file its counter by April 09, the bench said “We further direct the State administration authorities to ensure that the norms with regard to social distancing are strictly followed by the authorities so that the eligible persons who are entitled to receive these essential items and cash subsidy, receive their due benefits in an appropriate manner.” Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami requested people not to crowd in fair price shops as tokens will be distributed in their houses. The State had also issued a Goverment Order (GO) to distribute Rs 1,000 in fair price shops by distributing tokens in their houses.
