Stepping in to ease the situation created by the lockdown, the Corporation here in association with leading temples has been feeding over 1,000 homeless people every day.

Since the lockdown, the homeless near Amma Mandapam, Mambalasalai Road and Cauvery Bridge in

Srirangam zone has surged and the civic body in association with the Srirangam Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple has started distributing food packets to around 200 persons. The Srirangam Temple has allowed its kitchen for the purpose.

Similarly, Tiruvanaikoil Jambukeswarar Temple has been feeding around 100 homeless people per day.

Meanwhile, in order to ensure food for all the homeless within the city, the civic body has decided to distribute food for at least 1,000 persons every day. Apart from the inmates in shelters for homeless on Madurai Road, Bhrathiyar Road and EB Road where only 250 persons were being fed, the civic body has identified people residing at junction railway station, KK Nagar, Ariyamangalam, SIT Colony, Amma Mandapam, Thiruvanaikoil, Chathiram bus stand and Woraiyur and Vayalur Road for distribution of food.

“We have been strictly maintaining social distancing and ensuring hygienic food from 6.30 am and a monitoring officer has been deputed to each zone,” said an official and added that the food has been served to migrant labourers also, who are under the care of the civic body.

The civic body has been distributing face masks being manufactured by the citybased women SHG too.
