HC moved to bring back Kumari fishermen stranded in Iran
A petitioner from Kanniyakumari district moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday and sought its intervention to bring back scores of Indians stuck in Iran, which is battling the worst outbreak of COVID-19.
Madurai
Sahaya Sathish, in his public interest litigation petition, stated that as many as 860 Indians had been languishing on some islands in the COVID-19-stricken Iran.
Among those stranded in Iran, most of them were fishermen from various parts of Kanniyakumari. The COVID-19 that swept across globally and countries, including China, Italy and Iran, had been imposing stricter quarantine measures to prevent any further spread of COVID-19.
Due to such strict precautionary measures, the Indians stuck in Iran could hardly report to their duty and facing hardship as they were not able to earn their livelihoods.
Moreover, they could hardly get access to basic needs. After being unable to withstand the crisis situation prevailing in Iran, they had been exposed to untold sufferings.
Their families in India had also been apprised of such an unhealthy situation. Despite taking such a serious issue to the External Affairs Ministry, no action had been taken to bring all those Indians back from Iran. Hence, the petitioner sought the bench to direct authorities concerned to bring the stranded Indians back from Iran.
