    Tiruchy, Kovai to get infrastructure facelift at 450 cr

    Tiruchy and Coimbatore Corporations will get projects related to basic amenities including underground drainage works at the cost of more than Rs 450 crore.

    The Minister for Municipal Administration S P Velumani said that underground drainage projects would be implemented in the newly added and extended areas in Tiruchy Corporation at the cost of Rs 238 crore. The drinking water projects would be implemented in the extended areas of Tiruchy Corporation at the cost of over Rs 53 crore.


    “Under the Smart City project, water supply would be provided round the clock for the extended areas based on the requirements of the public at the cost of Rs 53.79 crore,” said Velumani, in theassembly.


    As far as Coimbatore Corporation is concerned, the underground drainage works are undertaken at the cost of Rs 469.62 crore in 60 wards since 2007 and the works are nearing completion. Underground drainage project would be implemented in the left-out areas in Coimbatore Corporation at the cost of Rs 175 crore, in which 152.95 kilometres of underground drainage pipes would be laid with the financial assistance from Asian Development Bank.


    Robots to be bought to stop manual scavenging:

    Velumani also said that the State government will procure 34 robots to undertake cleaning works in underground drainages in 34 Municipalities at the cost of Rs 35 crore. The robots would be purchased under the Swachh Bharat scheme and it will eradicate manual scavenging, said Velumani.


    AC toilets to be set up in Corporations:

    Following Chennai,every Corporation in the State will receive one air conditioned public toilet each on a pilot basis and if the scheme becomes successful the project would be extended across the State and the number of toilets in Corporations would be extended. The project would be implemented with the help of private players, where they would beentrusted with the job of maintaining the air conditioned toilets.
