Extortion by cops: L-G visits Grand Bazaar police station
Lt Governor Kiran Bedi on Monday visited the Grand bazaar police station in the wake of complaint that the beat officers attached to that station had extorted money from a tourist couple here.

The Lt Governor in a Whatsapp posting said that she tried to find out the causes which led to it and areas for improvement to be made hereafter. The policeman reported to have extorted from a couple dismissing since the date of the incident, she said, adding that a case of extortion has been registered by the police station.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rahul Alwal was directed to finalize the investigation expeditiously and send the case for earliest trial, she said.
He was also directed to trace the delinquent policeman to deal with him as per the law for his criminal act, and treat him at par with any other accused absconding, the Lt Governor said. A standard operating order shall be made and issued by the DGP to ensure that the rank and file is fully oriented to deal with such as complaints received, and that women Cops would always be co-opted, Ms Bedi said.
Other areas of improvement to be made was informed to SSP, who was present with her,she added. Thereafter,she visited the IRBN premises which were found to have kept in a rather neglected state. The supervisory officers were not seen to be taking their roll call briefings ever, she added.
