Chennai
The storage capacity of the two tanks located near Minjur are Thathaimanji and Kattur would increase to 350 mcft once the works are completed. “The residents in Minjur are struggling to get drinking water even when the water capacity increases. Locals will not struggle for drinking water every year, if we stop almost 1,600 Mcft from getting drained into the sea. So, we are planning to increase the storage capacity of both the tanks from 58.27 Mcft to 350 Mcft. Also, the height of the bund will be raised,” said a senior WRD official.
The official said that the farmers in Minjur were also dependent on the water for groundnut and paddy cultivation from these two tanks. “After improving the storage capacity of the water, it will be sufficient for residents and farmers in North Chennai,” said the official.
The WRD department has also submitted a proposal for two check dams at Edayanchavadi and Sadayankuppam to increase the drinking water supply. “This is the first proposal for check dams at these places, the work will be done in two phases for which the government is yet to provide approve the proposal. If the check dams are constructed in this stretch, it will hold 1 TMC to 2 TMC water,” said the official.
