Though a few questions were complicated, students claimed that by and large, all the questions appeared within the frame of the new syllabus. “Questions from Part-1 and Part-2, which carried one and two marks respectively, were easy to attend,” said P Sivakumar, a student of a private matriculation school in Pammal.

He said though five-mark questions were “twisted”, it was not difficult to answer. “However, certain questions that carried five marks could not be answered,” he claimed.

The examinations assume significance this year as over eight lakh students who are appearing for the exams will be tested on a new syllabus for the first time. In the city, over 47,000 students have appeared.

“We thought the Maths paper would be very tough since the new syllabus was so difficult to study,” S Sasikumar, a Class 12 government school student in Chromepet said. According to him, last-minute tips from the teachers helped him to appear the Mathematics exam on a confident note.

A senior official from the Directorate of Examination said except for stray incidents of copying, no major malpractices were reported from any of the districts on Monday.

More than 4,000 flying squad members were deployed to monitor the exams across the State. The official said, “The question papers were kept in more than 200 rooms with tight security and CCTV cameras were installed in these strong rooms.”

After a gap of two days, students will appear for Computer Science, Biochemistry, Political Science and Home Science on Thursday.
