According to the farmers, it is said that as many as 17 channels deviating from Cauvery namely Vadakkarai, Thenkkarai, Kattalaimedu, Uyyakondan, and Ayyanvaaikal have been irrigating for around 2.2 lakh acres of land. Though water is being discharged into 17 channels, the quantum of water is inadequate to save the horticulture crops like banana, betel leaf and other crops along the 17 channels in Tiruchy and Karur districts. They demanded to discharge 5,000 cuesecs of water to the channels as the Mettur level is already above 100 feet. Â The farmers, led by the Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam Tiruchy district secretary Ayilai Siva Suriyan, submitted a petition with the PWD (River Conservation) Executive Engineer Baskar and appealed to him to release the quantum of water which they had been demanding for. The official, who received the petition, assured to forward it to the higher officials to decide on their demand.
