AR cop on duty at Sivaganga bank shoots self to death

The deceased has been identified as V Yogeswaran, a 2013 batch police constable and a bachelor. He is a native of Arittapatti, near Melur, Madurai district,sources said.

The incident, which occurred on the premises of the nationalised bank located near Tirupattur old bus stand, shocked and saddened the fellow policemen and officers.

The ill-fated constable wearing a lungi was found dead lying in a pool of blood over an SLR rifle just beside a chair in the bank’s rest room. He opened one of the two live rounds from the SLR and fatally shot himself, the sources said.

Sivaganga Superintendent of Police R Rohith Nathan inspected the spot and said the cause of death behind the suicide is yet to be known. However, Tirupattur Town police have filed a case and are investigating, the SP said.

Tirupattur Deputy Superintendent of Police M Annadurai said Yogeswaran was deputed as security guard in the bank since February 25. He was very calm and polite and moreover good at work.

Yogeswaran got access to the rest room, which remains adjacent to the strong room of the bank at 6 am before reporting for duty on the fateful day.

The incident came to light after breaking open the room around 9.45 am. Preliminary inquiries revealed that domestic dispute could be the cause behind the incident.

A couple of years ago, Yogeswaran’s brother had divorced his wife owing to some reasons. When Yogeswaran’s parents urged him to get married, he was reluctant and expressed his dissent, citing his brother’s condition following the divorce.

As Yogeswaran opposed marriage proposals, it subsequently ran into issues. The constable could be frustrated before taking this extreme step. However, the exact cause behind the incident is yet to be ascertained, the DSP said.

Tiruppattur Town Inspector of Police Ananthi said based on a complaint lodged by S Rajapandi, bank manager, a case has been filed under Section 174 of the CrPC.
