1 killed, five bikes gutted in group clash at Tiruvannamalai

Two persons were arrested and Section 144 was clamped on a village near Kalasapakkam in Tiruvannamalai district following the death of a youth in a fight that ensued between two villages, namely Melarani and Elathur on Monday.

Police said that Kalaiarasan (25) of Melarani colony was killed in an altercation that happened between the youth of Melarani and Elathur when the youth of the latter village drove their two-wheelers in a rash manner. As district level sports meet were underway at the Melarani Government Higher Secondary School, youth from various places including Elathur, participated and would leave the venue in their two-wheelers, which they drove rashly. Despite being warned, the youth from Elathur did not pay heed. Annoyed at this, the Melarani youth blocked the road with their vehicles on Sunday night and when the Elathur youth arrived, it lead to an altercation in which Kalaiarasan was killed and succumbed to injuries on the way to the Tiruvannamalai Government Medical College Hospital.


Enraged at this, the Melarani youth went to the school where the sports meet was being conducted and set afire to 5 two wheelers, owned by the Elathur youth. Hearing the incident, the Kalasapakkam police rushed to the spot and conducted investigations while Vellore range DIG N Kamini and SP MR Sibi Chakravarthy also visited the area. Police reinforcements were rushed to the spot and prohibitory orders under Section 144 was clamped in the area.


Meanwhile, demanding the arrest of the killer, Melarani colony residents blocked the Melarani-Chengam road at 8 am on Monday affecting traffic for more than three hours. Investigations are underway.
