Case on AIADMK men for banners at CM event

Sources said this is the first time political banners had come up on the roads following HC order directing the government not to install banners following Subhasri’s death in September 2019. While political parties assured the court through affidavits that they would refrain from doing so, on Wednesday while Palaniswami visited Sunguvarchatram for an inaugural function of a private tyre factory, nearly 15 banners were spotted on both sides of the road near Kananthangal where the factory is located.

Flag posts were also seen on both sides along with a few arches and cut-outs of the Chief Minister. Sources said these hindered public movement and that the AIADMK party cadre had not obtained permission for the installation either.

Even during Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mahabalipuram in October last year, huge banners had been installed across the State, but after permission from the Corporation.

On Wednesday night, Sunguvarchatram police registered a case based on a complaint by Revenue Inspector A Padmapriya. Sources said since there were no names mentioned on the banners, those behind its installation are yet to traced. When contacted, Kancheepuram Superintendent of Police B Shamoondeswari confirmed that a case has been registered.
