Threat to social justice under BJP: Stalin

Leading the charge against the BJP on the issue, DMK president MK Stalin said that social justice was being endangered ever since the BJP formed the government. Responding to a tweet about the SC verdict, Stalin tweeted; “The BJP regime should make steps to avoid any confusion in reservation to BC/MBC/SC/STs and disturbance to social justice.”

Joining the issue with Stalin, Makkal Needhi Maiam vice president R Mahendran said that reservation as a social justice scheme was implemented with the intention to give due representation to oppressed, downtrodden and neglected people. “Ambiguity in law was contributing to courts issuing verdicts that defeat the purpose of reservation and create a social tension every now and then,” Mahendran remarked.

“Verdicts are beyond the purview of criticism because courts operate as per law. But, Parliament enacts law. So, the Centre should immediately move amendments in the Parliament to set right the setback caused to reservation by the verdict,” the MNM vice president remarked.

“Instead of enacting CAA like legislations that keep people in the grip of fear, MNM and its leader Kamal Haasan, urge the Centre to immediately amend and strengthen the reservation laws that lift people from the lower strata of the society,” Mahendran added. Advising the Centre to pass a legislation to safeguard reservation, DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation of India) urged the SC to reconsider its verdict, which has shocked people who believe in social justice.

Stating that the SC verdict was against the principle of social justice followed in the country, DYFI state secretary S Bala said that at a time when caste-minded people oppose the appointment of Dalit as noon meal workers, reservation remains the only relief to the problems of scheduled caste people, but the apex court verdict has threatened even that.
