“It is good that Rajinikanth has spoken for the rights of minorities. State government is of the same view when it comes to minorities and even Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has assured that not even a single person from any minority community would be affected if CAA or NPR is implemented,” said Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar in Chennai on Wednesday.

Rajinikanth, on Wednesday, took the line of Centre and state in CAA and NPR issue by stating that Muslims of the country will not be affected and they are misguided by political parties and religious heads. The comments of Rajinikanth was widely criticised by opposition parties, but was supported by AIADMK and BJP.

In the past, the AIADMK distanced itself from the comments of Rajinikanth, but in this issue they have tagged the line of their ally BJP. While supporting Rajinikanth, Jayakumar recalled the 1998 Coimbatore bomb blast and said that Muslims were targeted and tortured by the DMK government.

“After the bomb blast, the DMK government in 1998 hunted down Muslims across the state and they were sent into a state of panic. DMK was involved in mass human rights violation against Muslims, but the party is now claiming that it is for the rights of Muslims which even the Muslims will not accept,” said Jayakumar.

BJP National Secretary H Raja said, “There is nothing wrong in the comments of Rajinikanth. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have never said that citizenship of Indians would be cancelled, but the opposition parties are dividing the public on communal lines.”
