Ticket sale in theatres to be monitored online: Govt

The state government would soon regulate the cinema industry here and take steps to ensure that the economically weak theatres are not closed. Based on the regularisation scheme cinema tickets would be fixed at a nominal rate, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Kadambur Raju told reporters here on Monday after a review meeting with stakeholders in the cinema industry.

Several theatre owners and distributors complained about financial losses and to help them a real online monitoring system will be developed through a common server. This will help the state to monitor the success and failure of films and help the theatre owners, the Minister said.

There also complaints from the public on theatres charging an exorbitant price for movies during the festival times and there will be steps to curtail such practice where customers are fleeced.

To a query on theatres charging extra for vehicle parking, the Minister said that all the issues pertaining to consumer interests were discussed and the objective of the meeting is to evolve a system where the issues are fixed in a transparent manner.

One of the long pending demand from the Tamil Film Producers Council is computerised monitoring of the online and offline sale of tickets to monitor the movie collection and we are working towards the same in tune with stakeholders, Raju said. Such a mechanism will help to monitor the show wise collection update and help to resolve the issues between the theatre owners and producers.

When asked whether the state has received any complaints from distributors in connection with the poor collections over Rajinikanth movie Durbar, the Minister said he was not aware of the poor collection by the film.

“Like you, I also read about the issue and there were also media reports stating that the movie was doing good in terms of collections. The state had not received any complaints in this regard,” the Minister said adding Lyca Productions which produced the movie had earlier approached the state seeking permission for special shows and the same was granted.
