According to a Corporation release, the ploggathon was conducted near Elliot’s Beach, Besant Nagar, in a move to create awareness on source segregation and keeping the public places clean.

Representatives of the Asia Book of Records supervised the event and announced that the event had been included in the book for registering the highest number of participants in a ploggathon. The event was held from the beach to Thiruvanmiyur. “The ploggathon run was conducted for 5 km from the beach and more than 3,000 citizens, including students, civic officials and volunteers, had participated in the event,” a Corporation official said. Meanwhile, a civic official said that precautionary measures were already in place at the venue to help the participants. Medical camps, ambulances and physiotherapists were deployed along the course apart from drinking water also being provided.

A college student, who took part in the event said that this helped her understand the importance of fitness and keeping the environment clean. “This also turned out to be a social gathering as I met so many people,” she said.

The civic body had earlier organised plogging events at Elliot’s Beach, Porur Lake and other places before holding the mass event on Sunday.
