Parents are concerned over the fact that the school which recorded 90 per cent pass in Plus 2 results a few years ago slumped to 48 per cent last year. Speaking on this, local resident S Kalyanasundaram said, “lack of enough teachers and facilities was one main reason why students were unable to give their best and hence the poor results.”

PTA president and former Brahmapuram panchayat president BT Pugazhvendan told DT Next that “though the government filled up teachers’ posts, the school still lacks a compound wall which is broken for nearly 300 metres resulting in cows and goats entering the campus and making it dirty. This problem is compounded by the fact that the school has no sweeper and night watchman. The school office lacks a record clerk and office assistant which burdens the existing staff.”

When Collector Shanmuga Sundaram recently visited a Government HSS at nearby Serkadu, this school also readied itself to him when he returned that way on his way to Vellore. Parents hope that the Collector would initiate some action with regard to Brahmapuram school also after he suspended a teacher from the Serkadu school for continued absence.

Govindasamy, a parent, said “though the school has higher secondary classes, it has no NSS or NCC nor a teacher for yoga, though the government has introduced it as a new subjectrecently.”

Kalyanasundaram said “the headmaster who joined duty a couple of months ago is hopeful of improving results if only the government chips in and does its bit by providing facilities like additional toilets and additional classrooms.” Elaborating, Pugazhvendan said “two buildings which were demolished as they were very old are yet to be reconstructed. If the buildings are provided it will mean eight additional classrooms resulting in students not having to study under trees or in dilapidatedclassrooms.”
