Centre’s nod for 2 more medical colleges in TN

The Central government on Tuesday gave administrative sanction for two more medical colleges in the state. According to sources in the Secretariat, one will be set up in the newly-formed district of Kallakurichi and another in Ariyalur.

Recently, the Central government has announced setting up of 75 new medical colleges in the country and the state government initially applied for setting up six medical colleges in The Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Dindigul and Namakkal, and the Centre sanctioned all six, inOctober.


Later, the state applied for three more medical colleges in Krishnagiri, Tiruvallur and Nagapattinam districts in November and obtained the administrative sanction from theCentre.


At a time when the state government was bragging that the state has got nine medical colleges in a year, the success of the state government in getting new medical colleges to the state continues as the state government gets two more medical colleges.


With the two new colleges, the state will get 35 government medical colleges in 29 districts. Sources also said that the Centre has passed orders to allot 60 percentage of funds out of the total Rs 750 crore allotted for the two medical colleges.


Recently, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced in the Assembly that the aim of the state government is to set up government medical colleges in all the 37 districts.
