The SSI was gunned down on January 8 by Y Thoufeeq (27) of Kottar in Nagercoil and A Abdul Shameem (29) of Thiruvithancode in Kanniyakumari at the check post in Kaliyakkavilai where he was posted.

When contacted, Deputy Superintendent of Police KP Ganesan of Kanniyakumari District Crime Branch, the investigation officer, said Thoufeeq and Shameem were taken to Ernakulam, where Thoufeeq reportedly dumped the pistol in the drain between the KSRTC bus stand and railway track.

After searching the drain with the help of sanitary workers for nearly 30 minutes, they recovered the weapon. The 7.65mm Italian pistol is reportedly meant only for Army supply. It had five live rounds, said the officials, adding that four bullets were found in the magazine, while the other one was inside the pistol chamber.

The recovered pistol would be produced before the Principal District Sessions court while remanding the accused. The DSP added that a knife, the other weapon that was allegedly used by the accused, was yet to be recovered.

The duo was nabbed by the police in Udupi district in Karnataka on January 14 after a hunt by the State and Central agencies. They were produced before Kuzhithurai Judicial Magistrate on January 16.

The Kaliyakkavilai police filed a case under Sections 302 and 506 (ii) of IPC read with 7 of 25 (1A) and 25 (1) (b) of Arms Act, 1959. Later, the police invoked other Sections of IPC and also the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

On Tuesday, the police had taken Thoufeeq and Shameem in custody for ten days from Tuesday for custodial interrogation after producing them before Kanniyakumari District Principal Sessions Court, Nagercoil.
