Party bonhomie evident on MGR’s birth anniversary

The ruling AIADMK led by party convenor O Panneerselvam and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday observed the 103rd birth anniversary of party founder MG Ramachandran at party headquarters here. Party MLAs, MPs and district functionaries thronged in large numbers to pay tributes to the party founder and iconic chief minister.

The MGR memorial at Marina were decked up by the Public Works Department and barricades were placed to regulate the visitors visiting MGR memorial. The Ramapuram garden bungalow and the Kodambakkam house of MGR also recorded footfall.


Minister for culture Ma foi Pandiarajan and Minister forRural Industries Benjamin visited the Ramapuram Gardens and spent time with the deaf and dumb school children on the campus. The party leaders also greeted the newly elected councillors and welcomed the cadre from other parties who joined the AIADMK on Friday. 


The AIADMK functionaries also offered special meals to the poor and played the popular songs from theMGR movies.


The AIADMK workers also shared the latest first look of actor Arvind Swamy who is donning the role of MGR in an upcoming film. The popular songs of matinee idol were shared on the social media by MGR fans.


The party cadre also distributed sweets to the public as part of the MGR birth anniversary celebration.


A sea of party workers and general public who thronged for the Kaanum Pongal also visited the MGR memorial on Marina beach where the former chief minister was laid to rest. The party had also announced public meetings at Vikravandi and Nanguneri Assembly constituencies which were recently wrested by the AIADMK fromthe Opposition. 


“Even after three decades the party revolves around its founder’s legacy and there is no other thalaivar to replace our iconic MGR. The one and only mass leader who was accepted by all the public was MGR,” said die hard MGR fan and former AIADMK MP KC Palaniswami.


No leader in AIADMK or other party can reach the heights of Ponmanachammal in Tamil Nadu politics, Palaniswami added.


In Puducherry

Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Puducherry and senior Congress leader V Narayanasamy on Friday paid floral tribute to a statue of former Tamil Nadu chief minister MGR. All legislators in the union territory were also present.


AIADMK legislature wing leader A Anbalagan led a procession of his party workers to pay tribute to MGR’s statue amid raising slogans in praise of the late leader. AIADMK legislators and functionaries of its different wings were among those present.


In Vellore


In Vellore, a sense of bonhomie and renaissance were felt among the party cadre during the celebrations across various venues in the town.


“The celebration reveals that party is still intact in the district despite lacking district level office bearers. We will work to ensure that our party wins in the local body polls in the district,” said KR Kumaresan, a party cadre.


At most Annadanam venues it was not the party workers who partook of the feast but local residents.


Former minister and district secretary VS Vijay provided chicken biryani at a venue on Anna Salai onthe occasion.


Still rankled by the victory of DMK in Vellore and the recent upper hand gained by the opposition party in rural local body polls, the AIADMK workers used the celebrations as a rallying point to boost the confidence of the party workers and most exuded confidence about victory in the upcoming elections.


Even senior party members and former MLAs, who maintain a low profile, were seen at various venues exhorting party workers and regaling them with stories of their “Thalaivar” as most new comers havenot seen MGR.


Former district secretary and Commercial Taxes Minister KC Veeramani led the celebrations in his native Tirupattur district and district treasurer and former district secretary M Moorthy helmed the celebrationsin Vellore town.


A party worker Nathamuni said “Annadanam is a good way for us to make the public understand MGR as he always helped the poor and his schemes too reflectedthis mindset.”
