More than 600 bulls participated in the annual event that was kick-started by Marungapuri RDO Santhi.

The event, jointly organised by the Palakurichi, Kalingapatti and Geeranipatti villages, started after the temple bull was released through the Ponnar-Sankar temple ground. The bulls from Tiruchy, Madurai, Sivaganga and Pudukkottai participated inthe taming-sport.

Meanwhile, a bull owner, identified as Palaniyandi (55) from Chukkampatti, near Rajagiri, in Pudukkottai district, came to Avarangadu with his bull for participation. After his bull had completed the fight, Palaniyandi was waiting at the collection point to receive his bull. At that time, another bull that was running fast hit him and gored Palaniyandi, injuring him seriously. Though he was immediately rushed to a first-aid centre, he succumbed to his injuries on the way. The police on duty then recovered the body and sent it to the Manapparai GH for a post-mortem. A case has been registered and investigationis underway.

In another incident, Azhagusamy from Nagarapatti in Pudukkottai, who came along with his bull, had a bet for Rs 1 lakh cash and promised to provide the cash to the tamer. However, no one dared to tame his bull and so he received the prize for the bull and left the place.
