Taking a suo moto cognizance based on Daily Thanthi news report that M Keerthika (21) from RS Madai village, who was admitted in the government hospital over labour pain, died along with her stillborn baby, the Commission issued a notice to the official. It sought a report about the matter, adding that the matter would be listed before the Commission within two weeks. According to the report, Keerthika was taken to hospital on December 27 and died the following day after giving birth to a stillborn. Her relatives staged a protest alleging negligence of nurses and duty doctors on the hospital, and filed a petition with the Collector to take action against them.

In another incident, SHRC directed the State government to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to G Madhanagurusamy, a resident of Oddanchatram in Dindigul, and recover the amount from a sub-inspector and head constable of Ambilikkai police station for violating his human rights by stripping and abusing him. Madhanagurusamy alleged in his petition that sub-inspector Vanithamani and head constable Mareesawaran had called him to the station based on a complaint by one Periyasamy and abused him.

The officials denied the charges and questioned the complainant’s allegations, pointing out that he did not say anything to the magistrate when they remanded him. The Commission also recommended the government to initiate disciplinary action against the policeofficials.
