Addressing political party representatives from the three districts, the Collector said petitions regarding attaching of various village panchayats to the nearest panchayat union would be studied and discussed at a meeting to be called on February 11. This would be followed by another meeting which would decide on the need to conduct delimitation exercise in the newly added areas. Local body polls would be held only after this, he added.

Vellore DRO J Parthiban — in the presence of Ranipet Collector S Divyadarshini and Tirupattur collector MP Sivan Arul — read out the list of villages which were proposed to be added to the nearest panchayat union. A political party representative felt the exercise could lead to trouble if villages are attached to different districts.

As of now, 20 village panchayats under Sholingur panchayat union in Ranipet district are proposed to be attached to Katpadi PU, and 12 village panchayats in Kaveripakkam in Ranipet district to Sholingur PU.

Similarly, 14 villages in Kaveripakkam PU were to be attached to Arakkonam PU, while four villages would be shifted to Kaveripakkam PU from Nemili PU.

In Tirupattur district, three villages now with Alangayam PU will be attached to Tirupattur PU while another two villages would go to Jolorpet PU, Parthiban said.

Similarly, three villages in Tirupattur PU would be shifted toAlangayam PU.

Large-scale changes were expected in truncated Vellore district where 26 villages now with Perenambut PU would move to Madanur PU in Tirupattur district. While five villages in Madanur panchayat union would be attached to Gudiyattam PU in Vellore district, one village in Pernambut PU would be attached to Gudiyattam PU in Vellore district. Similarly, 13 village panchayats in Madanur PU in Tirupattur district may be added to Anaicut PU in Vellore district.

DMK wins most PUs in T'malai

Indirect elections to the posts of chairpersons and vice-chairpersons in Thandarampattu, Pudupalayam and Thurinjapuram panchayat unions and to the post of vice-chairperson in Kalasapakkam PU were put off on Saturday due to lack of quorum, officials said.
While no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the district, tussle between the Dravidian majors to wrest the top post in PUs resulted in many members absenting themselves, in order to help the rival candidates.
In the 34-member district panchayat, DMK candidates were elected the chairperson and vice-chairperson after the party won in 24 wards. While AIADMK could secure only nine wards, one seat was captured by an independent. DMK’s C Parvathi was elected the chairperson and R Bharathi the vice-chairperson.
In the race for the top spot in the district’s 18 panchayat unions, the DMK bagged Tiruvannamalai, Chengam, Kil Pennathur, Polur, Kalasapakkam, Chetpet, Arani, Cheyyar, Pernamallur and Thellar PUs, The AIADMK was successful in Jamunamarudur, West Arani, Vandavasi and Vembakkam PUs, while the PMK bagged the Anakavoor PU.
