‘Nellai’ Kannan’s speech directly targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah,” said Jayakumar, while addressing the media, in Chennai Airport.

Jayakumar was on his way to Tumkur to receive ‘Krishi Karman’ Award, to be given for the state government, from the Prime Minister. He said that Tamil Nadu has received the most number of awards among the states.

When asked the intention behind the arrest of ‘Nellai’ Kannan, he replied that the state had no intention but the speech of ‘Nellai’ Kannan had. “The intention behind the speech was to destroy the prevailing harmony in the state. The BJP gave complaint and the action was taken on the complaint. The government will not be a silent spectator when a person is threatening to murder a person,” said Jayakumar, who also said that there are reasonable restrictions when we exercise our fundamental rights. He further said that Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had made it clear that the National Population Register (NPR) will not be implemented and it is only the CAA which will be collected alongside the usual census but it is the protesters who are agitating with vested interests.

“Chennai Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan has informed that a protester Gayathri has links with Pakistan and police are now investigating. Complete details about the protesters and the reason behind the protest will be revealed after investigation”, said Jayakumar.
