Districts continue to record dengue cases, only fever, say officials

Dengue outbreaks are continuing in several districts of the State, with Madurai, Perambalur, Dharmapuri and Salem recording many cases for the past two weeks, show the data from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme of National Center for Disease Control (NCDC). However, the State Health Department officials claim that the number of dengue cases has reduced to almost nil.

In December, Madurai, Tiruvannamalai, Pudukottai, Theni and Karaikal that have recorded at least 10 cases of suspected fever and dengue. In all, there have been more than 6,500 cases across the State. With about 22 cases of suspected dengue, Perambalur has the highest number of cases were reported in December. There has also been a reported case of leptospirosis. Tiruvannamalai, too, reported 22 cases, but all the cases are under surveillance and have not been confirmed. Pudukkottai reported 20 cases of dengue last month, and the cases are being reported in the district this month as well. Hospital authorities at the government hospitals in city say that they are continuing to get dengue cases but not more than 10 cases in a week. There are also other fever cases, but there are no complicated cases, said doctors.


However, officials from the State Health Department officials claimed that dengue cases have reduced to almost nil, and most of the cases that are being reported now are only fever cases. “The district health officers are being alerted and house-to-house survey is being done. The control and preventive measures, including source reduction activities, are being undertaken. The State Health department is also planning to map mosquito breeding and research on their presence at various hotspots across the State,” said Public Health Director Dr K Kolandaisamy.
